Then the boring bit lands: who’s driving, where you’ll park anywhere near the Utilita Arena, and which one of you spends the whole night on lime and soda while everyone else has a good time. An event has a door time you can’t argue with, a curfew you don’t control, and a moment at the end where thousands of people stand up together and head for the same few exits. A race day is a long day. You’re on your feet on grass for hours, in shoes chosen for photographs rather than distance, and the weather does whatever it fancies between the first race and the last. Nobody wants to end that with a trek across a field car park in the dark, hoping whoever drove has stayed off the bar since two o’clock. Door to door means your heels only have to survive the enclosure.
There’s no Metro station at the course. The nearest stop leaves you a couple of miles short, and any race-day shuttle is worth confirming on the racecourse’s site. That’s the gap a minibus fills. Eight to sixteen of you collected from Seaham, Chester-le-Street or Washington, dropped at the gate, picked up from the same spot.
The bit everyone forgets: getting out afterwards
Getting there is the easy half. Everyone’s fresh, nobody’s in a rush, and the roads are moving. The problem is the twenty minutes after the encore, when the building empties in one go, surge pricing kicks in across every taxi app, and the car park is a queue before you’ve reached your row.
